Welcome to Shawinigan!
Known as “The City of Electricity,” Shawinigan is located in the Laurentian Mountains region of Quebec, approximately a 20-minute drive from Trois-Rivieres. Shawinigan is situated on the Saint-Maurice River, which was a popular travel route for fur traders during the 18th century and a well known logging area during the second half of the 19th century. Today, the river is a source of hydroelectric power for the province, hence the city's nickname, and Shawinigan boasts a theme park called La Cite de l'energie (Energy City), which attracts many visitors throughout the year to explore its interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations, observation tower and many other on-site activities. The theme park also is home to a lovely garden area called Les Jardins de la Synergie (The Synergetic Gardens) where visitors will find themselves walking through a flowery wonderland.La Maurice National Park of Canada is situated just west of Shawinigan and offers an array of year-round recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. Within the city, travellers may also want to make a stop at Eglise Saint-Pierre, a historic church built between 1908 and 1937 that features stained glass windows created by Italian artist Guido Nincheri. A noteworthy and famous citizen to come out of Shawinigan is former Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien, who was born and raised in the city.
